What is lock rekeying?
Lock rekeying is when a professional locksmith changes the pins inside your lock so that only the new key works. It’s important to choose a good and recommended locksmith company such as us, because a locksmith saving time will do a poor job such as only replacing half the pins which would leave your lock easier to pick in case of a break in. The worst thing I saw was when we opened a lock for rekey and only two pins were in there. There should be five.

Why should you get the locks rekeyed?
You don’t know who the home’s previous occupants were or who they gave a key to. For obvious reasons, you don’t want a random person to have access to your home. Also, in many cases the locks in the house have mismatching keys and it can annoying to have to try each key or carry a bunch of keys all the time. We can rekey the locks and they’ll all match.
Why rekey the lock instead of just getting a replacement?
Mostly because it’s cheaper. Another reason is if you have a designer lock, or custom made lock, you will want to keep your existing lock but still need to change the key for security.

Ensure that the locksmith you call is fully licensed, bonded, and insured. Ask around to see if any of your friends, family, or neighbors used a great locksmith recently. Ask the full price and get it upfront. Read all the company’s reviews.
Can you rekey the locks yourself?
If they’re smart key locks and you have the original key, absolutely! You can buy a smart key reset tool and blank key and rekey your lock to the new key. It’s about five minutes. If it’s not a smart key or you don’t have the original key, you won’t be able to do it yourself. Because you would need a whole rekey set which costs more than getting a professional this one time, and anyone who’s practiced can tell you, if you don’t have practice, you will blow the cylinder and probably end up needing to replace the whole lock, which is more expensive.
Can every lock be rekeyed?
Most can, but not all. For example, if you don’t have the key and you have a smart key lock, it can be rekeyed but it needs smart key reset tool which most locksmiths don’t have (we do have it) so they will tell you it can’t be done. Additionally, if your lock is in very bad shape, it won’t be rekeyable because the cylinder won’t open correctly.
